In this month’s instalment of digital marketing monthly, our experts explore format updates to Google Search ads, new accessibility features on LinkedIn and the introduction of handles on Youtube.
Google updates format of search ads
Google is now rolling out updates to its search ads - initially on mobile before desktop - including replacing the “Ad” label with a “Sponsored” label, and introducing business names and logos.
This update will prove useful for brands, especially in a situation where competitors are bidding on your keywords. It’s good for searchers too, as it will be more obvious which business’s website they’re visiting before clicking an ad.
“According to a recent study, the top 3 ad spots on Google SERPs receive 46% of the clicks. It will be interesting to see how this latest update influences click-through-rates — my prediction is that it will have a positive impact, as Google ads and organic search results become even less distinguishable."

LinkedIn adds new accessibility features
LinkedIn is introducing a series of new features designed to improve accessibility on the platform, as it makes accessibility and inclusive design part of its core principles.
These new features include: adding automatically generated captions on video content to support those who are deaf or hard of hearing, and a high contrast mode for the mobile app, which will adjust colours to aid people with visual impairments.
“Accessibility is a growing point of focus for many brands, and with good reason. Not only is it the right thing to do, designing your comms with accessibility in mind can remove the barriers that have marginalised many people and prevented them from engaging with your brand.”

YouTube launches handles
Youtube introduced handles earlier this month, providing a faster and simpler way for users to find and engage with creators and each other on YouTube.
Handles join channel names as an additional way to identify a YouTube channel. In contrast to channel names however, handles are truly unique to each channel so creators can further establish their distinct presence and brand on YouTube.
“Most social media channels use handles and it’s great to see Youtube follow suit. Brands can now benefit from increased visibility on the platform, with this update making your brand easier to find, tag and mention. It will make it easier to promote your channel outside of the platform too!”
